>>> Wendell Cooper & Mathew Heggem
Originally
from Pittsburgh, Wendell Cooper’s roots are in breakin’,
capoiera, house, drum n’ bass and freestyle dance. Wendell
dances with the Jedi Monks crew from Pittsburgh and is co-artistic
director of Transport, with Nicholette Routhier (D.C.). He studied
dance at the George Washington University, and worked with several
guest artists, including Miguel Gutierrez, Wendy Woodson, and
Nicholas Lechter. He currently teaches at Patapsco High School
and Center for the Arts.
Recent performances include: Starscape, Gloucester New Arts Festival, XI D.C.
International Improvisation Festival, and the Baltimore Music Conference. Also,
Wendell Cooper has danced with Clancyworks Dance Company (D.C.), the Dance Construction
Company (D.C.), the Magpie Music and Dance Company (Netherlands), and was a member
of Tantara which performed at Buzz nightclub (D.C.).
His work blends many styles and nurtures spontaneity. With a varied approach
to improvisation and composition it is genre-bending. What connects these is
a philosophy of expressing aliveness through the body.
Mathew Heggem began his dance training with Pacific Dance Company
in Northwest Washington under the tutelage of Eliese Kerman. His foundation is
built on classical
and contemporary ballet technique, but his desires have lead him to explore other
movement forms - including modern, improvisation, jazz, flamenco and Middle Eastern
dance.
Inspired by his early education in dance, he traveled away from the Northwest
to pursue his undergraduate degree at Goucher College (Baltimore, MD), where
he is concluding his studies as a dancer and choreographer in their program.
Whilst engaged in this community, he's had the opportunity to perform diverse
works by students, faculty and guest artists: highlights include works by Charla
Genn, Robert Moses, Ricki Weiss, Paul Taylor and the Bournonville Project.
Currently,
Mathew is working with Adrienne Clancy of ClancyWorks as a company dancer and
interning as assistant to the director. He's also engaged in several
historical reconstructions under the guidance of Mino Nicholas - including
Humphrey's 'The Sleeper' from Night Spell and Shawn's solo, 'Invocation of
the Thunderbird.'
