Gospel Satellites, Michael, Mark, Liz and Don
The Gospel Satellite Quartet plays old spirituals from the James Weldon Johnson songbook, and tunes from Blind Willie Johnson, the Carter Family, Elvis, Odetta, Charlie Feathers, Lungfish, and Alan Lomax field recordings. None of us has a background in religious music, or are even regular churchgoers, but we feel at home here because our names – Michael,(Willis) Mark,(Jickling) Liz,(Downing) and Don(Peyton) echo those of the four evangelists. Knock, and it shall be opened unto you!
All kinds of doors open when you play this music. The end times, world on fire, loved ones gone to the grave, the baby born, the new Jerusalem where pain and sorrow cease to be. Have compassion, forgive your brother, love your enemy: even now, your name is being written on the razor’s edge.
